At the moment, I’m working on a translation of The Diary of a Young Girl by Nikolay Gumilev. It’s an amazing book, not at all like some of the other works I’ve written, but still a good read. The book takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia, and is filled with hilarious and heartbreaking passages describing life in the Caucasus region during the time of the Czarist government.
The book is about a young girl who falls in love with a man named Andrei, who is supposed to be the commander of her country’s revolution, but who also happens to be the owner of a small land company. After a few minutes of staring at the man’s face, he turns to the woman and offers her some money.
